Visual Dialogue explores the relationship and collaboration between artists Irving Penn & Issey Miyake. After being brought together by American Vogue in 1983, the pair's visual dialogue then continued over twenty-six years, resulting in over 250 photographs. Twice a year for the Spring and Fall seasons. From the mid-1980's until nearly the end of the 1990's, Miyake would send his collections from Japan to Penn's studio. It was then that Penn would interpret Miyake's designs within his own visual language. With deep admiration, treating Miyake's creations like precious sculptures. The chosen images were then shared with Miyake and his devoted team, and then eventually the world on a printed page. Within these pages are visual documentation of the creative moment and interconnected thoughts of these two visionaries.
'Mr. Penn was my signpost - he who stared into the core of all things in this chaotic world of beauty and design. He was my mentor, who rigorously judged my work through wordless communications. I will cherish always the trust and respect we shared, as an irreplaceable gift.' Issey Miyake
